Switched Finally! – from WinXP to Ubuntu Hardy Heron

with one comment

Quick, almost painless switch…Copied over my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles as-is. Installed all internal IBM apps including Notes, AT&T VPN Client with just an apt-get against an internal repo. Using Pidgin for Yahoo/MSN/GTalk and XChat for IRC. Thank god i don’t have to forego my favorite tools like IntelliJ, Yourkit.

Hiccups so far:

  • My Dell Wireless 1450 USB adapter was flaky. So i bought a LinkSys Wireless-N PCI Adapter (WMP300N) and set it up using ndiswrapper with instructions from here.
  • Had trouble creating a new Websphere profile since Ubuntu uses dash. The workaround is to switch the shell back to bash as mentioned here.
